A city day, not an airport

There are two ways to put Ahmedabad in a Somnath and Dwarka trip. One is to land, meet the driver and go, which is what our from Ahmedabad plan does, and if that is all you want it is the shorter and cheaper page and you should be reading it instead of this one. The other is to give the city a day and a night. That is this plan, and it exists because Ahmedabad is India's first UNESCO World Heritage City and the old town rewards a morning on foot rather than a drive-past.

Here is the part nobody writes down. Everything else on this circuit runs on temple time, which is generous. Ahmedabad runs on municipal and museum time, which is not. The official Mandir to Masjid heritage walk leaves the Kalupur Swaminarayan Temple at 07:45 and finishes at the Jama Masjid around 10:30, roughly twenty stops through the pols, and Gujarat Tourism publishes exactly those times. There is no later departure. So day one is not an arrival day. If your flight lands at ten in the morning, the best thing in Ahmedabad has already finished without you.

And Akshardham at Gandhinagar, about 30 km out, closes every Monday. Mandir darshan is free and runs 09:30 to 19:30 the rest of the week, the exhibitions and the evening Sat-Chit-Anand water show are ticketed separately, and no phone, camera or bag comes inside with you. They go into a cloakroom at the gate. Because Akshardham sits on day one here, a Monday start empties the day of its two best hours.

So we do not sell a Monday departure on this plan, and we tell you to be in Ahmedabad the evening before.

What goes wrong

Three things, and all three are avoidable if you tell us early. Akshardham closes every Monday, so a Monday day one costs you the afternoon and the evening show. The heritage walk has one departure, 07:45, so a late arrival costs you the old city. And the trip ends at Somnath, not back where it started, which catches people who booked a return flight from Ahmedabad. From Somnath, Veraval railway station is close by and Diu airport is roughly 86 km away. Driving back to Ahmedabad is a full extra day and it is not in this price. We check all three against your dates and your tickets before quoting.

Know before you go

Akshardham at Gandhinagar closes every Monday, so this trip does not start on a Monday.

The heritage walk leaves Kalupur at 07:45 and there is no later departure.

No phones, cameras or bags inside Akshardham. Everything goes into a cloakroom.

Day two is about 450 km to Dwarka, eight to nine hours, starting at 06:00.

The trip ends at Somnath, not Ahmedabad. Book your exit from the Saurashtra side.

Dwarkadhish closes 13:00 to 17:00 and Somnath's light show pauses in the monsoon.

Your route, day by day

Day 1

Ahmedabad, the city day

The walk goes at 07:45 and Akshardham shuts at 19:30. This night is what makes a real city day possible instead of a half one

Open route

Driving routes are indicative โ€” the actual road taken depends on traffic and darshan timings on the day.

Good to know on price

Rs. 15,999 across four nights is about Rs. 4,000 per person per night with the private vehicle and breakfast inside that figure. It moves with group size, hotel tier and season.

Where you sleep in Ahmedabad decides how day one starts. Sarovar Portico is in Kalupur, the old-city quarter the 07:45 walk sets off from, so the morning begins on foot rather than in traffic. Keys Select sits over by the Gandhi Ashram on the other side of the river, which is quieter and better placed for a late arrival but puts a drive between you and the walk. Neither is the better hotel. They start your day differently, and on a one-night city stop that is the whole decision.

General darshan at Somnath, Dwarkadhish and the Akshardham mandir is free. Sabarmati Ashram is free. Seva and donations at Somnath go through the Shree Somnath Trust at somnath.org and nowhere else. The heritage walk is booked through heritagewalkahmedabad.com. No private number, no personal UPI, ours included.

Why choose Experience My India

  • We check the Monday closure before we quote. Akshardham sits on day one, so your start date is the first thing we look at.
  • We plan day one around 07:45. One departure, no second walk, and a flight that lands at ten misses it. We would rather move your flight than move the walk, because we cannot move the walk.
  • We warn you about the cloakroom. No phones, cameras or bags inside Akshardham. People discover this at the gate with a queue behind them.
  • We publish the drive. About 450 km to Dwarka, eight to nine hours in practice, with a 06:00 start to beat the city.
  • We check your return ticket. This plan ends at Somnath. If you have booked back out of Ahmedabad, we need to know before you pay, not after.
  • We will send you to the cheaper page. If you do not actually want a city day, the from Ahmedabad plan costs you less and drives you the same coast. We would rather you booked that one than felt oversold on this one.

This plan is not for you if

  • your only possible start is a Monday and you will not shift it
  • your flight cannot get you into Ahmedabad the night before
  • a 450 km driving day is out of the question
  • you needed to end where you started. Say so and we will reshape it or point you elsewhere

Five days, four nights, from Rs. 15,999 per person, and the only version of this circuit that gives Ahmedabad a morning on foot instead of a drive past the window. Send your dates and group size and we will confirm in the same reply whether your day one falls on a Monday. +91 7302265809.

Frequently Asked Questions

Package FAQs

Is Akshardham at Gandhinagar closed on Monday?
Yes, every Monday. Mandir darshan is free and runs roughly 09:30 to 19:30 on the other six days, with the exhibitions and the evening water show ticketed separately. Because Akshardham falls on day one of this itinerary, we do not start the trip on a Monday.
What time does the Ahmedabad heritage walk start?
07:45, daily, from the Kalupur Swaminarayan Temple, ending at the Jama Masjid around 10:30, and Gujarat Tourism publishes those times. There is no later departure. That single fact is why day one of this plan assumes you slept in Ahmedabad the night before.
Can we take phones and cameras into Akshardham?
No. Phones, cameras and bags are left in a cloakroom at the entrance, and that includes small electronics. Plan for no photographs inside the complex, and carry as little as possible so the deposit and collection do not eat your afternoon.
Does the tour end back in Ahmedabad?
No, and this is the one people plan wrong. Day five finishes at Somnath. Veraval railway station is close by and Diu airport is roughly 86 km away. Driving back to Ahmedabad is a full extra day and it is not included in this price, so book your exit from the Saurashtra side.
Is Rs. 15,999 per person or for the group?
Per person, and it is a starting figure. Your firm quote depends on group size, hotel tier and season, since one vehicle split among six costs each traveller less than the same vehicle split between two. Send dates and headcount for the real number.
